8-year-old digs up prehistoric shark tooth on vacation – Boston News, Weather, Sports

Riley Gracely and his family often visit Palmetto Fossil Excursions in Charleston, SC and occasionally even find some impressive artifacts. This summer, Riley dreamed of making his own big discovery — and he did it.

“I just looked up and it just lay down,” said Gracely, 8, of Pennsylvania, describing his discovery of a fossilized shark tooth in a pile of dirt.

“As soon as I see it — and I like that a lot — I’m like, ‘I’ll wait for everyone to come over.’ I just pick it up and walk away with it,” he said.

When Gracely’s family stopped by, he immediately revealed the tooth, which is more than four inches long.

The tooth has been identified as belonging to an Angus titan shark. Experts say the tooth is probably worth a few thousand dollars, and it’s being described as the find of a lifetime.

But Gracely says he’s still not done digging: “I want to go back and find more big teeth so I can add them to my collection.”
