Coast Guard crew rescue 7 people after boat was struck by lightning in Gulf of Mexico

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Coast Guard crews rescued seven people off the coast of Tampa Bay after their boat was struck by lightning on Saturday.

Video shows the bolt impacting the 39-foot vessel just before it capsized about 100 miles off the Tampa Bay coast.

The group had reportedly left Tarpon Springs and were en route to a fishing tournament in the Gulf of Mexico.

Five women and two men were taken to safety by crews from USCG Air Station Clearwater.

No injuries were reported.
