7 dogs rescued in a raid on a notorious breeder in rural Missouri

ST. LOUIS — A long-time troubled dog breeder in rural Missouri has been raided again. The Animal Cruelty Task Force of the Humane Society of Missouri traveled to Douglas County in southern Missouri Tuesday morning and successfully rescued seven dogs owned by a formerly licensed breeder.

Marilyn Shepherd (aka Marilyn Williams) ran a breeding business under the names Cedarcrest Kennel, Williams Kennel, PuppyFind and Pups4U. She was recently found guilty of criminal contempt for violating a 2021 consent agreement reached by the Missouri attorney general’s office.

Shepherd appeared in Douglas County District Court and said she sold all of the puppies in her care before the trial. The judge ordered the removal of the seven remaining adult dogs from the property and fined Shepherd $9,500.

Shepherd was arrested at the time of the rescue and could be prosecuted for animal abuse.

The rescued dogs, five males and two females of different terrier breeds, are being taken to the Humane Society of Missouri headquarters in St. Louis for emergency veterinary treatment. Several of the dogs suffer from abrasions and other health problems. The hope is to put the dogs up for adoption in the near future once they have recovered.

The Humane Society of Missouri has been rescuing Shepherd-owned dogs for a quarter of a century. HSMO first investigated Shepherd in 1997 after receiving multiple reports of neglected puppies in her care.

This is also the second time in less than a year that the Animal Cruelty Task Force has rescued animals on Shepherd’s property. In 2021, Task Force rescued 42 dogs from Shepherd’s Cedarcrest Kennel.

“Marilyn Shepherd is a repeat offender with a decade-long history of animal cruelty and breed violations,” said HSMO President Kathy Warnick.
