6-year-old boy killed in hit-and-run on turnpike in Broward County, 2 injured

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run accident that killed a 6-year-old child and seriously injured two others.

The accident was reported just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in the north lanes of Florida’s Turnpike, about 350 feet north of Griffin Road.

According to authorities, a black 2015 Volkswagen Passat was stopped in the inside lane for unknown reasons and had its lights off.

Troopers said a blue 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE was traveling north on the turnpike, approaching the Griffin Road overpass and tailing the Passat.

Soldiers said the impact caused the Passat to spin clockwise across the center and outer lanes, hit a guardrail and eventually come to a stop on the outside shoulder, heading southwest.

The Mercedes came to a stop in a northerly direction, straddling the inside strip and lane, authorities said.

According to FHP. The driver of the Mercedes was described by police officers as a black man between the ages of 20 and 25, about 5ft 5 inches tall and reportedly carrying a baby sitting in the back seat.

The owner of the Mercedes is cooperating with officers and was not the driver at the time of the incident.

The 37-year-old Passat driver and a man who was in the passenger seat were both taken to Broward Health Medical Center by Davie Fire Rescue but were later released.

The timing of the incident is still being actively worked out by FHP Traffic Homicide Investigators.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
