Four people were killed in a shooting at a medical building in Tulsa on a hospital campus in Tulsa on Wednesday, a police captain said.
Tulsa Deputy Police Chief Eric Dalgleish confirmed the death toll and said the gunman was also dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident is the latest in a spate of gun violence across the country.
What triggered the deadly attack was unclear. However, the unidentified gunman carried both a pistol and rifle during the attack, Dalgleish said.
“Officers are currently going through every room in the building looking for additional threats,” police said Facebook post just before 6 p.m. “We are aware that there are multiple injuries and possibly multiple victims.”
Police responded to the call three minutes after dispatchers received the report and made contact with the shooter a minute later, Dalgleish said.
Police Captain Richard Meulenberg also said several people were injured and that the medical complex was a “catastrophic scene”.
Police and hospital officials said they were unwilling to identify the dead.
The St. Francis Health System placed its campus on hold Wednesday afternoon over the situation at the Natalie Medical Building. The Natalie building houses an ambulatory surgery center and a breast health center.
Tulsa resident Nicholas O’Brien, whose mother was in a nearby building at the time of the shooting, told reporters that he rushed to the scene.
“They pushed people out. I don’t know if some of them got hurt or just got hurt during the shooting, but some of them couldn’t walk very well. But they just wobbled and stumbled and got her out of there,” he said.
“I was pretty scared. So when I got here and then heard that she (his mother) was fine, the shooter had been shot and was down, I felt a lot better. It’s still terrible what happened,” O’Brien said.
Shooting Wednesday comes eight days after an 18-year-old gunman armed with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle broke into the building Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 19 children and two teachers before he was fatally shot himself and just over two weeks after Shooting at a Buffalo supermarket by a white man accused of killing 10 black people in a racist attack. Last Memorial Day weekend saw several mass shootings across the countryalthough individual fatalities accounted for most gun deaths.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also at the scene, a spokesman said. A reunion center has been established at a nearby high school where families can find loved ones.
