2017 Suffolk DA rules involving police were ‘justified’ – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden has confirmed the findings of an investigation into a 2017 shooting involving officers in Chelsea, which followed an investigation originally led by former prosecutor Rachael Rollins.

“This was a deeply traumatic event for everyone involved – Mr Pastrana’s wife, his daughter, the local Chelsea police and firefighters and the neighbors who, through simple proximity, became involuntary participants in the unfolding tragedy,” Hayden said.

On May 17, 2017, Kelly Pastrana had an argument with his wife, and he beat and choked her, according to Rollins. After his wife and the couple’s 10-year-old daughter took refuge at a neighbor’s house, Pastrana followed them and fired shots at them as they hid. Pastrana then returned to his home and fired several shots at a Chelsea police officer and set his house on fire while still inside. As the house burned, Pastrana shot a second officer, who returned fire. Pastrana eventually died in the fire he started.

Rollins noted in her report that both officers fired their guns in “the proper exercise of self-defense” and did not press charges against the officers.

“Although my findings directly relate to the legality of certain actions by police officers, I am critical of the tragedy of that day and the trauma and loss suffered by Mr Pastrana’s family, particularly his wife and young daughter, as a result aware.” Rollin added.
