2 youths arrested in St.Louis accident linked to murder and carjacking

ST. LOUIS – Two youths were arrested after an accident in the Downtown West area on Wednesday. In addition to a series of carjackings in St. Louis, both have also been accused of murder in recent days.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, authorities expect to transfer a 16-year-old youth to federal custody for his alleged involvement in the crimes.
Police claim the suspects in the accident are “possibly responsible” for carjackings on Monday and Tuesday, as well as the murder of 38-year-old Kay Johnson. Investigators say Johnson died in an attempted car theft at the 4700 block of Compton Avenue earlier this week.
Following these crimes, a joint task force with St. Louis and federal agencies gathered intelligence. The task force reviewed surveillance footage and Wednesday afternoon found a black vehicle that was reported stolen in a December carjacking.
As police approached a person who got into the vehicle, the driver fled from an undisclosed location in St. Louis City. Police then tracked the vehicle for an unknown amount of time and used tire spikes.
During the encounter, the driver of the wanted vehicle ran a red light before a driver with a green light rammed the car. The wanted vehicle landed near the corner of Delmar Boulevard and North 20th Street around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
“The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will continue to work with federal partners, both in this newly formed task force investigating these recent incidents and in our normal day-to-day operations, to keep the most violent offenders at the highest level of accountability that.” is ours by law,” the department said in a statement Thursday.
A man with the youths was also arrested in Wednesday’s crash. Police have not released the names of those arrested in the crash.
The investigation into the accident, Johnson’s murder and the recent series of carjackings is ongoing.
