2 people shot dead in Uvalde Memorial Park, Texas police say – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — As dozens of children played and people picnicked at Memorial Park in Uvalde, Texas, Thursday afternoon, gunfire rang out about a mile and a half from the now-closed elementary school, which authorities believed was gang-related violence where 21 people were killed in May by a juvenile shooter.

Two people were shot dead around 5:30 p.m., police said. Two teenagers were taken to hospitals in San Antonio for treatment, the Uvalde Police Department said in a statement; The identity and condition of the victims were not immediately known.

Four suspects are in custody and are being interrogated, the police said on Thursday evening. The shooting is believed to be “gang related,” Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told CNN.

When the shooting broke out, Celeste Ibarra was at the park with her daughter Aubriella, who has been suffering from PTSD and depression since May 24 Shooting at Robb Elementary Schoolwhere she was gunned down by her schoolmates and two teachers as a third grader on Day 19, she told CNN.

The Ibarras had been enjoying their day at the park with other family members and were loading their car to leave when gunfire erupted between the slides and basketball courts.

“A lot of kids dove and dove,” Ibarra said. “It was terrible.”

State troopers responded quickly to the park, escorting those in hats out.

The Memorial Park is located near Uvalde’s town square, where a makeshift memorial was erected to honor those killed in the May shootings – the deadliest school shooting in the United States since the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The shooting in the park came just days after new school year started.

Ibarra didn’t see anyone hit by the bullets, she said.

Authorities are in the early stages of their investigation, they said.

“We are working with the Uvalde Police Department and Sheriff’s Office following an alleged gang-related shooting in Memorial Park.” the Texas Department of Public Safety tweeted. “This information is preliminary, as the situation evolves we will be working with local law enforcement to provide updates.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was outraged when he heard about the gang-related violence, he said, adding he had ordered the Department of Public Safety to send six more troops to Uvalde and soldiers to patrol gang hotspots too to let.

“Gang violence has no place here in Texas and we will bring the full powers of justice to these despicable criminals,” he said in a statement on Twitter.
