2 men die at a construction site in Edwardsville, Illinois

EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois — Two men were found dead Friday in a manhole at a construction site in Edwardsville, Illinois.

The incident occurred on the 100 block of East Union Street. Edwardsville Police responded to the scene at approximately 6:55 p.m. and found two men in a manhole. Police said the men were working in an underground area.

An officer tried to help, but the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police Chief Michael Fillback said efforts are being made to recover the men’s bodies. They said they would not release any further information until the two men’s families were contacted. This is an ongoing investigation. It is not known when the incident occurred or what led to the two men being in the shaft. FOX 2 will provide updates as more information becomes available.
