A 14-year-old girl died and eight people were injured in a shooting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Police say “many rounds” were fired over a crowd after an argument broke out at “some kind of party”.

The suspect is still at large.

Sergeant Andy Williams told reporters nine people were hospitalized after the mass shooting, which took place at 1 a.m. at a mall in northwest central Phoenix.

The 14-year-old girl died after being taken to hospital.

Two women have life-threatening injuries and six others have non-life-threatening injuries, Sergeant Williams confirmed.

Frightened people had run en masse through the nearby streets to escape the slaughter.

A witness told ABC15: “I heard over a hundred gunshots.

“A group of people just started running in all directions. I myself hid behind cars as the shots came closer and closer.”

The injured are between 17 and 24 years old.

In an interview published by ABC 15, Sergeant Williams said no suspects were immediately identified and no arrests were made.

He added that a gun appeared to have been used after an argument broke out among those gathered, in what he described as “some kind of party”.

“Many shots were fired in this crowd as everyone fled the area,” he said.

The shooting happened about an hour after police reported that a teenager had been shot dead about three blocks away in front of his home.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the two shootings were related.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego responded to the shooting on Twitter, saying, “Seems we can’t go a day without another mass shooting.”

“Time’s up,” she said.

“Change must happen now.”

“While the children are running for their lives, we do nothing. What do we do? Why are you here if not to solve a problem as existential as this?

“It’s not inevitable. These kids weren’t unlucky. That only happens in this country and nowhere else.”
