More than a million parents in the UK now say the chances of them using a chalkboard in the near future are “very likely”.

Just last month, Metro.co.uk reported on a 14-year-old who collapsed from hunger at a south London food bank, and other Brits who refused potatoes because they couldn’t afford to cook them.

These devastating cases are just a taste of what life is like for Britain’s poorest amid the deepening cost-of-living crisis.

In the next three months alone, one in ten parents – about 1.3 million – say they expect to visit a food bank to help them cope with their rising energy bills and inflation.

Of those reporting an increase in their household bills, 58% have saved on heating as a result.

A third skipped one or more meals in the last three months to keep up with other important expenses.

And one in five (20%) failed to cook a hot meal at least once because they couldn’t afford to use the oven.

The research was published by the food bank charity Trussell Trust, which together with Deliveroo will provide up to two million meals for people suffering from hunger.

Deliveroo customers can now add a fundraiser to their orders, with all proceeds going to the charity’s tables.

The money goes towards packages of food for at least three days for individuals and families.

Emma Revie, chief executive of Trussell Trust, said: “Everyone should be able to afford their own food, but as families face their worst income squeeze in a generation, people are telling us they are making impossible choices between heating and eating and coercion turning to food banks to feed themselves.

“Our new partnership with Deliveroo will help us support food banks to bring emergency food and in-food bank support to thousands of people in dire need as we work towards our long-term vision of a future where no one gives in to charities Purposes must come over.’
