Twelve passengers died in a bus fire in India.

The vehicle had collided with a truck on a highway in the west of the country before going off the road.

Many of the passengers had been asleep before the crash, which took place at 5 a.m. today.

As a result of the impact, flames spread throughout the bus. Authorities have confirmed that 12 people died in the fire.

Some people who lived near the stretch of road had rushed to the scene but were unable to reach the passengers due to the raging fire.

Flames had completely engulfed the vehicle and pictures today show the extent of the damage caused.

Rescue work began after firefighters and police put out the fire, police officer Bhagwan Adke said.

Paramedics also rushed 43 people with severe burns were taken to a hospital in Nashik.

Eknath Shinde, the state’s top elected official, said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was distressed by the bus tragedy. “May the injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected,” he tweeted.

Nashik is almost 120 miles northeast of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra.

Hundreds of thousands of people are killed or injured on India’s roads every year. Most accidents are attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.

On Wednesday, 25 people died and another 20 were injured after a bus plunged into a ravine in India.

Around 45 to 50 people, all from a wedding party, were believed to be on board the vehicle when the vehicle plunged down the cliff edge in northern Uttarakhand state.

Police told the Press Trust of India that the wedding group fell into the gorge in Pauri district.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

There have been a number of other serious off-road accidents in India this year.

In April, a cable car crashed, leaving two dead and dozens more stranded for days.

Then, in July, flash floods devastated a Hindu pilgrimage, killing 42 in a mudslide.

Weeks later, lightning strikes killed at least 20 people in one day.
