A 10-year-old Florida boy has been arrested after he allegedly sent a text message threatening a mass shooting at his elementary school.

Police arrested the fifth-grade student Saturday night after learning he had sent text messages saying he would commit violence at Patriot Elementary School in Cape Coral.

“This student’s behavior is disgusting, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas,” said Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno.

The sheriff’s office said they are taking the threat seriously after the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday, killing 19 children and their two teachers.

“The safety of our children is of the utmost importance. We will have law and order in our schools! My team didn’t hesitate a second…NOT A SECOND to investigate this threat,” the sheriff said.

The sheriff took a vigorous stance against the child’s message on social media, which he concluded was a “false threat” to the school.

“Right now is not the time to behave like a petty delinquent,” Marceno said. ‘It’s not funny. This kid made a fake threat and now they’re getting real consequences.”

The Sheriff’s School Threat Enforcement Team was made aware of the messages, who later turned the case over to the Juvenile Services Criminal Investigation Department due to the child’s age.

Police arrested the boy after investigators questioned him and determined the likely reason for his arrest. His name was not published.

Following Tuesday’s Uvalde massacre, the second-deadliest school shooting in US history, schools across the US have hired additional security personnel and restricted visitors as concerns mount over copycat threats.

In Buffalo, New York, where ten people were killed in a racially motivated mass shooting at a supermarket earlier this month, the largest school district immediately announced new safety measures. At the school, all visitors without exception must call ahead and the doors remain locked at all times.
